Brampton School Boundaries: A 2026 Home Buyer Guide

Your Brampton school boundary is set by your home address, not by the listing, the builder or the neighbourhood name - and the only people who can confirm it are the school boards themselves. If schools are part of why you are buying in Brampton, verify the boundary in writing before you sign anything, because catchments here are reviewed and changed as new subdivisions fill in.

I am Navneet Bhasin, a real estate agent with eXp Realty, Brokerage, and this comes up on nearly every family showing I run in Brampton. Below is how the system actually works, where to check, and what I have learned about the questions that catch buyers out.

Quick answer

In Brampton, two publicly funded English-language boards draw attendance boundaries: the Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. Each address sits inside a designated catchment for each board. Boundaries are set by the board, can be changed by a board vote, and are not guaranteed by any property listing.

Key takeaways

  • Your designated school comes from your address, and each board draws its own separate boundary for that address.
  • Boundaries move. At its 29 October 2025 meeting the Peel District School Board considered a Grades 1 to 5 French Immersion boundary change in Mount Pleasant, effective September 2026.
  • Bus eligibility is a distance rule, not a boundary rule: 1.0 km for JK to Grade 1, 2.0 km for Grades 5 to 8.
  • You can apply outside your boundary, but the deadline is before 15 February and transportation becomes your responsibility.
  • French Immersion in both boards is allocated by random selection, so no address guarantees a seat.

How do Brampton school boundaries actually work?

Every residential address in Brampton falls inside an attendance area for a public elementary school, a public secondary school, and the Catholic equivalents. The boards draw these areas around building capacity and projected enrolment, then direct students accordingly.

Two things surprise buyers. First, the public and Catholic boundaries for the same house are drawn independently, so the two designated schools can sit in opposite directions. Second, a boundary is an administrative line, not a promise attached to the property. Nothing in an agreement of purchase and sale fixes which school your child attends.

Eligibility to attend a Catholic school is also not automatic. The Dufferin-Peel elementary registration requirements call for an original baptismal certificate for the child or a parent or guardian, along with proof of age, proof of Canadian citizenship, immunization records reported to Region of Peel Public Health, and proof of home address.

Where do I check which school my Brampton address is zoned for?

Go to the source. Each board publishes a find-my-school lookup, and Dufferin-Peel directs families to the transportation consortium's tool at businfo.stopr.ca. The boards are the only authority on your address.

What you want to know Where to check What it will not tell you
Public designated school Peel District School Board Future boundary changes not yet voted on
Catholic designated school Dufferin-Peel Catholic board, Admissions 905-890-1221 Whether your family meets the eligibility requirements
Bus eligibility for that address Student Transportation of Peel Region Which school you are designated to attend
School profile and achievement data Ontario's find-a-school tool Attendance boundaries - it tells you to contact your board

My standing advice: get the answer by email from the board, with the date on it, and keep it. A screenshot of a map is not confirmation.

Why do Brampton school boundaries change?

Because Brampton keeps building, and the boards keep rebalancing. These are not rare events, and they are documented in public board reports.

The clearest current example sits in Mount Pleasant. At the Peel District School Board meeting of 29 October 2025, trustees considered a Grades 1 to 5 French Immersion boundary change between Herb Campbell Public School and Brisdale Public School, effective September 2026, phasing in with Grade 1. Board figures put Brisdale's French Immersion enrolment at 81 in September 2025, rising to a projected 158 by 2030 with the change, against a school capacity of 1,005.

An earlier report shows the pattern plainly. On 1 June 2022 the board's Physical Planning, Finance and Building Committee received a recommendation to shift a catchment between Pte. Buckam Singh Public School and Treeline Public School, effective 30 June 2022. Pte. Buckam Singh was carrying 704 students against a capacity of 600 as of 31 March 2022, with seven portables; Treeline had 721 against a capacity of 923. The affected area sat among Mayfield Road, The Gore Road, Countryside Drive, McVean Drive, Goreway Drive, Castlemore Road and Airport Road.

One line in that report deserves every new-build buyer's attention: because no existing students were affected, "no community information meetings are required." On a brand-new street, a boundary can be set or moved without a public meeting.

Can I apply to a school outside my boundary?

Yes, through what the Peel District School Board calls a flexible boundary request. Procedure FPE701A, approved and effective 25 June 2024, governs it, and the details matter more than most families expect.

Applications for September entry are due before 15 February, and only after the home school principal has approved the request. Decisions are communicated in writing by 1 April. Requests are ranked by priority: consistent child care inside the requested boundary or a required course unavailable at the home school; students returning to a school after a family move elsewhere in Peel Region; siblings of those students; students joining a sibling in a program placement; and finally other compassionate grounds considered individually.

Approval is conditional on space. If a request is declined, families may appeal to the Superintendent of Education for the requested school's area.

Then the part that changes the household budget: the procedure places transportation to a flexible boundary school entirely on the parent or guardian. Courtesy transportation can be requested, but it is reviewed annually and is not guaranteed. Dufferin-Peel handles flex boundary requests directly through the school principal.

How does French Immersion change the picture?

More than any other factor, and buyers routinely get this backwards. French Immersion seats in both Brampton boards are allocated by random selection, so no address buys you one.

At the Peel District School Board, Procedure SAW1213A sets Grade 1 as the French Immersion entry point and Grade 7 for Extended French. Applications open in the first week of December, and the deadline for the random selection is the last Friday in January at 11:59 p.m., with families notified by the first Friday in March. Elementary French Immersion enrolment is capped at 20 per cent of projected Grade 1 enrolment, and the procedure states that "There are no flexible boundaries available for students in Grade 1 French Immersion."

The Catholic board runs it differently again. For 2026 to 2027, Dufferin-Peel French Immersion applications opened 17 November 2025 and closed 1 December 2025, with random selection results emailed 8 December 2025 and registration due 19 December 2025. Each Grade 1 class has 23 spaces, families rank up to eight schools, and the board states plainly that "There are no boundaries for any French Immersion centre in Dufferin-Peel." No busing is provided, so the drive is yours.

Will my child get a school bus in Brampton?

Possibly, and it turns on distance rather than preference. Student Transportation of Peel Region serves both boards and publishes these walking-distance thresholds.

Grade Walking distance threshold
JK to Grade 1 1.0 km
Grades 2 to 4 1.6 km
Grades 5 to 8 2.0 km
Secondary 3.8 km, or 3.2 km where public transit does not serve the community

Two details worth knowing before you fall for a house. Distances are measured with the consortium's own GIS software, not with Google, Bing or Apple maps, so your own measurement means nothing. And eligibility can change between years, particularly at the moves from Grade 1 to 2, Grade 4 to 5 and Grade 8 to 9 - the walk that works in Grade 1 may not qualify in Grade 2.

How should I judge a school without relying on rankings?

Use the province's own data rather than a commercial ranking. EQAO publishes achievement data for every school and board in Ontario and runs interactive dashboards you can read yourself.

For context, EQAO released 2024 to 2025 results on 3 December 2025. In English-language schools, 74 per cent of Grade 3 students met the provincial standard in reading and 64 per cent in mathematics; in Grade 6 it was 86 per cent in reading and 51 per cent in mathematics; 58 per cent met the standard in Grade 9 mathematics, and 85 per cent of first-time eligible students were successful on the OSSLT.

Read those as one input among several. A single year from one cohort tells you little, and EQAO's dashboards are more useful for trends than for a league table. The better questions are about grades offered, program availability and the length of the walk.

Frequently asked questions

Does buying a house in a school's boundary guarantee my child a spot?

No. Your address determines your designated school, but placement depends on space, program availability and board decisions that can change. French Immersion is allocated by random selection in both Brampton boards regardless of address. Confirm your designated school with the board in writing before you commit to a purchase.

How do I find out if Brampton school boundaries are changing near me?

Watch the Peel District School Board's planning reports and board meeting agendas, which publish proposed boundary changes with enrolment and capacity figures. The Dufferin-Peel board publishes its own. Where no current students are affected, a change can proceed without community information meetings, so new-build buyers should check directly.

Can my children attend the same Brampton school if we move mid-year?

Possibly. Under Peel District School Board Procedure FPE701A, students who attended a school the previous year and whose family has moved elsewhere in Peel Region are a listed priority for a flexible boundary request, and their siblings rank next. Applications are due before 15 February, and transportation becomes the family's responsibility.

Are public and Catholic school boundaries the same in Brampton?

No. The Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board draw their attendance areas independently, so one address can have designated public and Catholic schools in different directions. Catholic eligibility also requires documentation, including an original baptismal certificate for the child or a parent or guardian.

What does Brampton family-sized housing cost right now?

Per TRREB's Market Watch for September 2026, released 6 October 2026, Brampton detached homes averaged $1,001,613 across 234 sales, semi-detached $778,223, and attached or row townhouses $737,900. Across all home types the city averaged $854,322 on 404 sales. Ask me via teamnav.ca for figures on a specific pocket.

The short version

Brampton school boundaries are set by address, held by the boards, and subject to change as the city builds out. Verify yours in writing with both boards, check bus eligibility separately through Student Transportation of Peel Region, and treat French Immersion as a lottery rather than a feature of the house. Nothing here is a statement about which school any particular address is assigned to - only the boards can tell you that.

If schools are shaping your search, that should be part of the conversation before we start touring, not after. I am happy to walk through which questions to ask the boards for the specific streets you are considering, and what the current numbers look like in those pockets.
